Chapter Five

~ Rylie ~

“So, you’re the elusive Rylie we’ve all been hearing about the past year. It’s nice to finally put a face to all the stories.”

Perplexed, I nod, unsure what Rebecca is talking about. She’s one of the cousins, I met at the family gathering. Honestly, I just want to get the hell out of here and go find Nic. We were on the way back to the cabin when she was pulled away with a few of the others. Then out of the blue, bags were put over our heads, and we were ushered into a room. After screaming until my lungs all but gave out, the sacks had come off our heads. To my surprise, it’s not some vampire kidnapping. No, it’s part of the festivities. All the couples got split up and taken to different celebrations.

Taking it in stride, I play along, drinking the different fruity concoctions that taste heavenly and eat the food. As far as bachelorette parties go, this is a mild one. I was invited to a few back in my college days. The most memorable being that of Melanie McGivern, sister to my then dormmate and on again off again girlfriend. We’d gone together as a couple. The amount of alcohol, puke, and naked bodies kind of meshed in my brain by the end of the night.

The most skin I’ve seen tonight was from one of the waiters who’d knocked a drink down the front of him, and he’d barely unbuttoned his shirt to dab it clean.

My current awkward conversation with Nic’s cousins seems to be the worst of it. To be fair, I’m only half-listening to their mumbling. I’ve always been a lightweight with alcohol, and this is some hardcore shit, probably because alcohol doesn’t affect vampires much. It makes the extra dose of hard liquor a necessity for them to even feel a buzz.

Deciding I’d better pay attention, so I can answer correctly then excuse myself, I focus, really focus on her words. All night, I’ve been dodging questions about Nic and me. In my inebriated state, I’m sure to say something compromising, and that is a no-no.

Taking another sip of my very red margarita, I wonder if it’s food dye or something else. The else has me a little worried, considering what it could be potentially. It doesn’t deter me from taking another sip. And another…and so forth.

Licking my bottom lip, I zone in on Rebecca. “So, come again on the whole elusive thing. I’m not sure I understand?”

She and Thea, her twin, stare at me with a smirk. I decide then and there I like them, more so, than the sea of other family members attending the wedding. Maybe, because they’re on the younger side, being in their fifties. For vampires that’s practically a baby. It’s sobering to know that most of the people at this shindig have lived five times my age and will live long after I’m gone. Pushing aside those morbid thoughts, I smile up at my two new friends.
